How does this election work? The Senate is the upper chamber of the US Congress. Each state has two senators, regardless of its population. Senators serve six-year terms, with elections staggered so that about one-third of the 100 seats are up for election every two years. Most states use a first-past-the-post system to elect senators, but some require an outright majority through run-off elections or ranked-choice voting. The vice-president is president of the Senate and has the casting vote if there is a tie in the chamber.
